Podcasts, inks and randos

It has been a long, long month, to follow up an even longer month that came before.

My father-in-law passed away at the end of August, and Regs and I have been doing what we can to keep it together for the next 8 months before her contract is up here and we can move to Colorado to be with her mom. In the wake of everything, I managed to lose my day job, and have only in the past two weeks found other work. I’m now working two jobs and it will be a little while before we’re back on anything resembling our feet.

Personal stuff out of the way, I’ve been keeping busy with things. I’m within spittin’ distance of finishing a loooong overdue short story I cooked up with my buddy Jeremy over at Destroy All All Podcasts, putting the final tonal touches on something I should’ve finished back in March at the latest.

It’s October, which if you’ve been paying attention means it’s #Inktober, and while I’d like to be back on top of my Space Wrestlers, it’s something I’ve had to step away from. They require more work than I’ve got time or emotional energy for right now. What requires very little time and/or energy is doodling random-ass shit on scraps of paper or my sketchbook before i go to bed or when I’m having my first coffee of the morning.

Speaking of the wrestlers, however, I want to mention that I’ve finished up the initial draft of a story starring some of the cosmic grapplers I’ve created. Another short piece, my first time writing anything resembling a script for a comic, and maybe an opportunity to do something I haven’t done yet. This year marks the 10th anniversary of my initial foray into mini comics, so I’ve been thinking about that again, especially after finding some success with my written work appearing in The Atomic Elbow.

Mini comics and zines in the era of e-readers? Well yeah. I’ll probably also offer digital versions of whatever it is I do. But judging by how long it has taken me to do 8 pages with Jeremy, maybe it will be in time for the 20th anniversary of my first mini.

I’m not the only one who’s been having it rough, either. My longtime friend and collaborator Adam Witt has been dealing with some personal stuff of his own, all while attempting to continue his studies in college. He’s been quite open and strong about all of it, and it impresses me that he can take it all as well as he can. He’s got some projects he’s working on as well, but more importantly (at least in my selfish little world) he and I are talking about doing something new and different that fits our specific bipolar/ADHD needs and tendencies as far as work ethic is concerned. But I’ve already said too much and don’t want to jinx another project before it’s even begun to truly form.

In completely different news, I have been playing a lot more video games than I have in quite some time. I’m currently on the last world in both Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario 3D Land, and have taken a break from both of those to get into Earthbound, a game I’ve owned for about a year but have never really taken the time to absorb. I never owned a SNES as a kid, so it’s one of those classics that I missed out on until recently.

That said, I fucking love Earthbound. I spent most of my childhood and teen years hating RPGs, and here I have found something that speaks to my particularly strange sensibilities. You guys can keep your Final Fantasys and whatever else the kids play. Give me more Mother games.

Oh yeah, I also recorded a an episode of Destroy All Podcasts with Jeremy (@whydoisay). It’s a two-parter mainly focused on Choujin Sentai Jetman, currently my favorite Super Sentai show, but it also manages to cover everything from Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad and the USA Network dub of Dynaman to Power Rangers Ninja Storm and the strange selection tokusatsu officially made available stateside. Check out Side A over at the DAPDX site here.

Speaking of tokusatsu, Jetman, Kamen Rider Amazon, Kamen Rider Black, and Kamen Rider Fourze have been essential viewing for me in the past few months, and having these shows has helped me fine some kind of comforting entertainment through the nuttiness of life. I can’t recommend Fourze enough, as it’s really got a lot of heart under it’s goofy Japanese teen exterior. I trash modern Kamen Rider and Sentai shows just a little in the podcast, but Fourze is one that is truly endearing.

Podcasting with Jeremy is a joy, honestly, and I hope he has me on his show again in the future. I’ve missed podcasting and enjoy being a guest on people’s shows, even if it’s just to bullshit about dumb things like super villain haircuts. I guess maybe I should think about doing my own podcast. But what would it be about?

Well that’s probably enough for now. I’ll leave you with easily the weirdest fucking thing I have ever drawn.

Anyways, thanks for reading and following along.
